Abstract:
Modified Soil-Adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI) produced from the 2003 ASTER image. MSAVI is a means of monitoring density and vigour of green vegetation growth using the spectral reflectivity of solar radiation. It is specifically designed for areas with low vegetation, such as arid lands, where soil reflectance in the signal is high. The index is intended to minimize the effect of bare soil.

Methods used in producing this dataset:
MSAVI computation
Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI) produced from the 2003 ASTER image. It is computed as follows: (2NIR+1-SQRT((2NIR+1)^2-8(NIR-RED)))/2, where NIR is ASTER VNIR band 3N (nadir) (0.78-0.86 micrometers) and RED is ASTER VNIR band 2 (0.63-0.69 micrometers). The model is implemented in Erdas Imagine and can be downloaded from http://www.gis.leica-geosystems.com/Support/Downloads/dwnld_detail.aspx?download_ID=8. The citations are: 1) Qi, J., Chehbouni, A.
