Chi Zhang has a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and a Master's degree in Botany (major in Molecular Biology) from universities in China. Before coming to the United States, he conducted research in forest ecology in the South China Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on the application of GIS and remote sensing in sustainable forest management. He attended Auburn University in Alabama as a Ph.D. student in Forest Ecology to conduct research on ecological modeling of biogeochemical cycles and received his degree in May 2008. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Auburn University before coming to ASU in April 2009. At CAP LTER, his research mainly focuses on modeling the impacts of urbanization on biogeochemical cycles (in the terrestrial ecosystems) in landscapes to the regional scale.
