Dr. Brewis Slade's research explores the interplay of biology, culture, and ecology in human health and demographic outcomes, studying such issues as infertility, family planning, body image, ADHD, and depression, from an anthropological perspective. She has run field projects in Mexico, the southeastern U.S., Samoa, Republic of Kiribati (Micronesia), and New Zealand. Her current research is based in Phoenix and explores the interaction of social, cultural, and ecological contexts on immigrant health, especially as they shape risk of poor nutrition, obesity, and diabetes. The project articulates with a number of other studies being conducted by Sustainability faculty members in the same community. Dr. Brewis Slade teaches courses in the global health, social science and health, and research design. She is also very involved in international education, managing study-abroad programs on sustainability-related themes in several countries, including New Zealand, Fiji, and the UK.
