Project Summary

Science Club's goal this semester was to make a map that could be used by children who visit Rio Salado Park that would include information that is accessible, educational and fun to use. Our final project is a map of the restored section of Rio Salado Park. Our Map includes artwork by the Sunland students as well as ecology facts, safety tips, and rules. We researched map types, used a treasure map of the school grounds to introduce mapping games and the children made lists of all the most important details and facts that should be included in a map for youth visitors. The children voted on Cool the Coyote as our map mascot and they hope to include Cool in future projects made for the park. We hope to create a treasure hunt style game that will be lead by Cool Coyote which will compliment the map. Highlights for the year:

Over the course of the semester Science Club focused on community. We began by learning about the biotic, abiotic, and cultural elements of our community. We got to know each other in the first few club meetings as we sketched, dramatized, and built models of our community. Throughout the semester our lessons and activities included global and agricultural sustainability, a historical timeline of Phoenix's Rio Salado watershed, and desert survival. The highlights of this semester were fieldtrips to Rio Salado Park where the children participated in a scavenger hunt and dipped into the reservoir (with buckets and nets) to check out the aquatic community.
