Project Summary
Our project idea was to gift the City of Phoenix and Service at Salado with a calendar of bird facts. The science club participants decided to research different birds, draw them, and add facts about the birds and Rio Salado into the calendar. We were truly amazed with the artistic and research abilities that these students posses. We all had so much fun learning about the birds and putting the calendar together.
Semester Highlights
Lowell Elementary School chose the theme of birds as a target area of study. The children were taken on outings to look the different bird types. We invited Dave Pearson, from Arizona State University to the club and he spoke on six legged animals like butterflies and beetles. Dave challenged the kids to think like scientists and use research methods. Tice Supplee from the Arizona Audubon Society introduced the children to the Back Yard Bird Count, a national annual bird census. We also had a personal introduction about Rio Salado from City of Phoenix Park Manager Danielle Taddy.
