Backyard Bird Research

Birgit Musheno, a Biology teacher at Desert Vista High School, has been an Ecology Explorer teacher for the past three years. Every year she has her students do bird surveys in their schoolyard and then go on to design and carry out a scientific investigation about birds in their backyards. The students have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from their research in many ways. See for yourself by reading their quotes and looking at their posters below.

"At first when we started this lab I was not looking forward to it at all. I was thinking, how interesting could birds be, and why would I care? I was wrong. As we got more into the experiment, it occurred to me that I need to take more time to watch birds and the outdoors around me. I never realized how many different species of birds existed and how each one was unique in its own way. I really enjoyed doing this project and feel I benefited in a lot of ways from it and learned many new things." -Meghann F.

"I enjoyed this project a lot, actually. I really like researching and compiling the information. It was cool to see the impact of population density upon the environment. I wish I could have gone more into depth with this experiment, like a year long thing." -Morgan F.

"I enjoyed doing this project very much. It gave me the chance to view nature. From doing this assignment, I now notice birds more often. I can now also identify birds that I used to not know what they were. After this project I will remember to view nature and Arizona's birds more often." -Krystal W.
