Bird Research at Discovery Elementary

photo of birders from Scott Bowling's class Mr. Bowling's class from Discovery Elementary in Glendale has learned a lot from bird research!

We were each assigned a different bird, so we all learned different things about our birds. Some kids used the Internet, and others looked at books of Arizona birds. Then we put everything in a magazine and shared it with the class.

We also go bird watching around our school. There are 9 groups and 2-3 kids in each group that visit 9 sites around our school. Each group goes to a different site every time, and each person has a different role like observer, recordkeeper or timekeeper. We have been trained to identify the birds by their beaks, feet, and plumage.

The birds that are most common are house sparrows, house finches and Great Tail Grackles. Now we know a lot of the birds in Arizona!
