Title
Scale Drawings of Birds

Grade Level
9-12

Protocol
Birds

Abstract
The objective of this lesson is to allow students to create a class project creating their own copy of Phoenix Birds, Waterford Press, as their class reference guide. Each student will learn to draw realistic birds on a grid system, a method commonly used in appliqué. After the birds are colored in, they will include basic information about each bird based upon research using actual field guides and other resources. At this point, options are offered, such as:

  • Students may choose to create a class reference guide or
  • Students may use their own personal reference guide or
  • Students may select a certain number of birds and make their own books.
Finally, students use their personal guide books when they venture out into the field to complete their assigned bird counts.
