Protocol

Abstract
The following is an attempt to integrate the Ecology Explorers Bird Diversity & Urban Habitat into an existing Ecology unit already in place for 10 th Biology and Honors Biology. The bird survey protocol and resources will be used as an integrating theme for several of the larger topics in the unit. This material can be introduced and executed at logical points of entry over the course of the unit. Some of the existing activities that have been used in the past will be replaced, others will continue to be used as before, and others will have their emphasis changed (i.e. former in-class activities will become homework) as determined by the instructor (at a future date). The projected length of this unit is 3-4 weeks. Alignment of the unit with the recently approved, rewritten state science standards has yet to be fully articulated; however, as the existing unit was already sufficiently aligned to the previous state standards, this is not anticipated to be a hurdle. In addition, the existing objectives, materials and procedures for the bird diversity protocol will stay in place until further, in-depth analysis on adjustment for the intended audience can be done.
