Undergraduate Education

CAP LTER provides opportunities for undergraduate students to apply theories and principles learned in the classroom to field and laboratory research. These opportunities include participation in the summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, which provides students with experience working on a faculty-led CAP LTER research project.

Students in the REU program focus on a well-defined research problem that is typically part of a larger research effort. They are given the opportunity to present a poster at the CAP LTER All Scientists Meeting and other scientific meetings Research Symposium. REU students also may co-author papers based on their summer research. Summer REU opportunities are solicited from faculty in February of each year, and those interested in participating in this program should contact caplter.outreach@asu.edu.

In addition, CAP LTER research sites are often used in undergraduate classroom learning as backyard learning laboratories. Faculty use CAP data to engage undergraduate students in learning about data analysis techniques using actual research data.
